Questions and answers

Is mold in my house dangerous?

It can be. Some people get stuffy noses, coughs or itchy eyes around mold. Children, older adults and people with asthma may feel it more. Not every mold is harmful, but you should not guess by color alone. Keep the area closed off, avoid disturbing it, and ask a local provider about testing if you are worried.

Will homeowners insurance pay for mold removal?

It depends on your policy and on what caused the mold. Some policies may cover sudden damage, like a burst pipe. Slow leaks and long-term dampness are often excluded. Read your policy and ask your insurer before work begins. Providers can often help document damage for a claim, so ask about photos and written notes.

Can I clean mold myself with bleach?

For a small patch on a hard surface, many homeowners clean it themselves with gloves, a mask and good airflow. Bleach is not a fix for porous things like drywall or wood. The mold roots can stay behind. Never mix bleach with other cleaners. If the patch keeps coming back, get it checked.

When should I stop DIY and call a professional?

Stop if the mold covers a large area, returns after cleaning, or sits in walls, floors or the HVAC system. Also stop if you smell a musty odor but cannot find the source, or if someone in the home has health issues. Request a callback to check provider availability and compare approaches before you decide.

How do I know if it is black mold?

You cannot tell by looking. Many molds look dark, and not every dark patch is the kind people call black mold. Only lab testing can name the type. A mold inspection and certified mold testing from a provider in our network can show what you have, how far it spreads, and what steps make sense.

Why does mold show up in basements after winter?

Cold snowy winters and freeze-thaw cycles can stress older foundations. Spring snowmelt then pushes water toward stone and block walls. Damp air and cool surfaces make a good home for mold. Many basements in older houses deal with this. A provider can look for the water source, not just the spots you can see.

How can I prevent mold from coming back?

Fix the moisture first. Repair leaks, clear gutters, and point downspouts away from the house. Run a dehumidifier in damp spaces and keep indoor humidity fairly low. Use bath and kitchen fans. Dry wet items quickly after a storm. Ask your provider what caused the problem so you can stop it at the source.

Is it safe to stay in my home during mold cleanup?

It depends on the job. For small areas, providers often seal off the work zone and use air filtration so you can stay. For bigger jobs, they may suggest you stay elsewhere for a short time. Ask each provider how they contain the area and what they advise for children, pets and anyone with breathing concerns.
